I hereby invite you to share your views with us on this blog. This would be extremely helpful for the IITK Alumni Association Board of Directors as well as for the Pan IIT and IIM alumni bodies to take either a pro / anti / or neutral stand on the issue - and work out a detailed action plan.

The facts:
1. The current reservation stands at 22.5% (for SC / ST)
2. The proposal is to introduce 27% additional reservation for OBCs.

3. There may be some exceptions to eligible OBCs based on the 'Creamy Layer' concept (See http://ncbc.nic.in/html/creamylayer.htm )
4. The proposal has come from the HRD ministry and is yet to appear before the cabinet & houses
5. The election officer has 'stayed' the proceeding due to impending elections, but the issue will resurface once the polls are through.
6. The constitution had earlier been amended to allow state governments to enforce reservation in private institutions, this amendment was passed without any hiccups.
7. In all likelihood, this reservation bill will go through the lower & upper houses of parliament unless the cabinet decides to drop it.

thanks and regards

-Rahul Mehrotra
VP - Board of Directors
IIT Kanpur Alumni Association
